When Elizabeth
“Lizzy” Delgarno, a
senior at Kelso High
School and a Lower
Columbia College
Running Start
student, expressed
interest in a nursing career, her dad
suggested she volunteer at Peace-
Health St. John Medical Center so she
could experience working in a health
care environment.
So last spring Lizzie added four hours
of volunteering, one afternoon a week, at
PeaceHealth St. John to her already busy
schedule.
Her first volunteer assignment was at
PeaceHealth St. John’s concierge desk. She
went on to volunteer on the fourth floor and
most recently in the Joint Replacement Cen-
ter, where she can be found greeting patients
with her bright smile and cheerful personal-
ity. She enjoys her volunteer work.
“[I like] seeing people come through who
need a replacement and start out struggling,
and then to see them walking around, engaged
in life—and most are so happy,” she says. “It’s
rewarding knowing I was a part of that!”
Lizzy’s volunteer experience has confirmed
her sense that a nursing career is right for her.
“I found out this is the career for me. This is
where I want to be—in a hospital setting.”

Patient pre-surgery and discharge
education classes.
Family and friend participation as
coaches.
Group physical therapy in an
atmosphere of camaraderie and oc-
casional friendly competition.
Dedicated, specially trained nursing
and rehabilitation staff.
A patient philosophy in which pa-
tients are treated as healthy, encour-
aged to wear their own comfortable
clothing, and sit up in recliners
instead of in bed.
Quarterly reunion luncheons where
patients show their newly found
freedom, connect with friends made
in the Joint Replacement Center, and
give feedback and ideas to improve
the program.
