Better, stronger, faster
S T E PHEN SHE L L ABARGE R , 5 2 ,
of Astoria, may soon
become the bionic man. Most recently, he had a partial left
shoulder replacement at the PeaceHealth St. John Joint
Replacement Center in Longview. He was suffering from an
old injury and a former surgery that had scar tissue buildup.
The replacement surgery by Jon Kretzler, MD, with
Longview Orthopedic Associates, was successful, and
recovery has been speedy. Within a month, Stephen was
back on the water, fishing.
Previously Stephen had both his knees replaced, as well as
a total hip replacement, all at PeaceHealth St. John Medical
Center. “The right shoulder is on the horizon,” he says.
Physical therapy has led to a successful recovery each
time, and Stephen has nothing but praise for his hospital
of choice. “Everyone there treats me really well,” he says.
“It’s a supergood hospital.”
At the Joint Replacement Center, hip and knee
replacements include a spectrum of care before, during,
and after each procedure. Our patient satisfaction scores
(90 percent) are much higher than average for Washington
hospitals (78 percent), and our patients recover sooner and
go directly home instead of to a rehabilitation facility.

Ongoing care
for your journey
J UDY WI L L I AMS HAS
lived with multiple sclerosis
(MS) for more than 30 years. Two years ago, she started
attending AfterCare, a program developed by PeaceHealth
St. John Outpatient Therapies, for support in her ongoing
journey with MS.
AfterCare is designed to help patients transition back to
an active lifestyle that fits their schedule and to continue
the progress they’ve made in their improved health. They
benefit from access to trained, professional exercise
specialists with ACSM/CSCS certifications. AfterCare
focuses on individual goals, including:
Strengthening
Flexibility
Endurance
Balance
Activity tolerance
Patients have access to cardiovascular and resistance
training equipment with an exercise specialist monitoring
their progress and a flexible workout schedule. Professional
guidance is provided throughout the program.
“AfterCare has been very supportive, and the skilled
instructors have given me the needed guidance and
encouragement with stretching and strengthening in my
ongoing journey with MS,” says Judy. “The camaraderie
with the others in the program takes the drudgery and
boredom away. It is a very positive experience overall.”
