WOMEN AR E
filled with questions as they prepare
for the transition to motherhood. Should I use
cloth diapers or disposable? Bottle- or breastfeed?
Crib or co-sleep?
When it comes to deciding where to have your
baby, there are lots of questions too. Where will I
be comfortable? Is the birthing center close to my
home, friends, and family? Will my baby receive
the best care?
Having a baby is one of life’s most extraordinary
experiences. Where your child is delivered should
also be extraordinary. The Family Birth Center
at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center is happy
to help you find the answers you need for mom’s
peace of mind.
Q
Does the birthing center have
classes and support groups
during pregnancy and after birth?
A
The PeaceHealth St. John Family Birth
Center gives one-on-one training and guidance
in the care of the newborn and family. Community
wellness offerings are available through PeaceHealth’s
YOU 101 classes, as well as support groups for patients
and families and monthly tours of the birthing center.

Q
Does the birthing center have
breastfeeding classes and
support?
A
Two certified lactation consultants are on
staff, and all registered nurses are trained
to help assist with breastfeeding. Additionally,
through outreach to the clinics, your lactation
consultant follows up on initial visits.
Q
Are the birthing center staff
certified?
A
Many of the birthing center nurses are
certified in inpatient obstetrics.
Q
Does the birthing center have
high quality scores?
A
Yes. The PeaceHealth St. John Family
Birth Center follows the Washington State
Hospital Association (WHSHA) Roadmaps for
Safety. Our vaginal birth after caesarian (VBAC)
rates are above the benchmarks, and we are
achieving ever-higher ratings in C-section and
episiotomy.
Q
Does the birthing center have
holistic birthing options?
A
Walking, position changes, and creative
support are encouraged during labor. The
use of telemetry electronic fetal monitoring
encourages movement during labor.

center before you deliver
Q
Do you have to move rooms after
birth?
A
Rooms at the PeaceHealth St. John Family
Birth Center are set up for labor, delivery,
recovery, and postpartum care in the same
room. Rooming-in of a support person and the
mother and baby is encouraged for a family
experience.
Only babies born prior to 35 weeks or needing an
increased level of care are transferred.
New moms have questions.
