Summer 2014
Safe summer fun
AHHH , SUMME R T I ME
. That warm season of light that is filled
with fun and abundant sunshine. After a long, gray winter in the
Cowlitz and the surrounding area, summer is especially precious,
helping us rejuvenate and recharge for the year.
Of course, summer fun means different things to different
people. Some people will spend their days biking and hiking on
the trail. Others get together with family for picnics and parties.
And some people choose to spend their days tilling the soil and
watching good things grow in the garden.
No matter how you choose to spend your summer days, we’d
like to encourage you to be a good steward of your health this
season. Not only can summertime bring fun and activity, but it
can also trigger accidents and health challenges that are unique
to the season.
This summer, watch out for these seasonal health hazards:
Outdoor accidents.
Boating, hiking, and biking are fun,
but they can result in painful accidents. Be sure to follow all
safety recommendations, such as wearing helmets and life
jackets, and keep a first aid kit on hand while you’re out.
Picnic food poisoning.
Warmer weather quickens the
growth of bacteria in food, which increases the risk of food
poisoning. Remember to chill leftovers promptly—and toss
any food left sitting out for two hours (or one hour in 90-plus
degree weather).
Mower injuries
.
Tinkering with your mower or trimmer
when it becomes clogged can put an end to your gardening for
the season. Stay safe in the garden this summer by having your
tools professionally serviced and wearing protective clothing
and shoes while you’re working.
If you do have an accident or health challenge during the
summer, PeaceHealth is here to help whether you need an
appointment with a provider for a stomachache, a trip to urgent
care for some stitches, or a visit to the emergency department
for something more serious. PeaceHealth is ready with the
support you need.
