lifetime—including service in Vietnam, 30-plus years
at a sawmill, and another decade working for the school
district—Mike developed habits that included a sedentary
lifestyle, lots of junk food, and a daily date with his favorite
hefeweizen beer. Life was going well until the moment his
doctor told him he needed immediate quadruple bypass
heart surgery. A separate aortic aneurysm meant Mike’s
heart was a ticking time bomb that could explode at any
second.
“It became clear that if I was going to live a long life
after surgery, I would need to make a decision to get off my
rear, give up the beer, and start exercising, so that’s what I
did,” declares Mike.
Mike enrolled in PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center’s
12-week cardiac rehabilitation program, taking advantage
of group exercises under the guidance of PeaceHealth’s
high-energy team of experts. He was surprised to discover
how much he looked forward to his sessions.

with compassionate, quality radiation treatment while
integrating education, clinical research, and radiation
physics to achieve improved outcomes.
Patients have access to some of the most advanced
technology for treatments, including intensity-modulated
radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy
(IGRT). Through computer targeting, this technology
delivers a high dose of radiationmore precisely to a tumor,
thus sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Other advanced
technologies, such as RapidArc, align radiation therapy and
onboard imaging (Cone BeamCT). These technologies are
used to optimize the accuracy and speed of tumor targeting.
PeaceHealth St. John Radiation Oncology is a
Commission on Cancer-approved program, working
collaboratively with PeaceHealth Southwest Medical
Center to give patients even greater access to services with
the same mission for excellent patient care.
PeaceHealth St. John Radiation Oncology provides
a van service daily to and from the beach communities
to allow patients to ride for free to their daily radiation
treatments. This service is funded with the help
of generous donations as well as support from the
PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center Foundation.
Approximately 350 new patients a year are treated. All
receive care from highly skilled specialists and caregivers.
Each caregiver is board-certified in his or her specialty—
physician, physicist, dosimetrist, and radiation therapist.
