—roughly the last few months
of the year, depending on your situation—is known as
open enrollment. It’s a great time for you to get clear on
your health care choices.
During open enrollment, individuals have the
opportunity to shop for a new plan and sign up for
coverage for the coming year. Take this time to evaluate
your health care needs, compare plans, and choose one
that’s right for you and your family.
For those of us in Cowlitz and neighboring counties,
there are many things to consider when thinking about
our health needs and coverage. When considering a
health plan, cost is certainly one factor. But it shouldn’t
be the only one. It’s to your advantage to find coverage
that meets your needs, values, and preferences.
AM I CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THE PLAN WILL COVER?
Look for specific details about coverage for doctor
visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, and dental
and eye care. As we age, it’s wise to look into coverage
for home care, nursing home care, and services like
physical therapy.
CAN I KEEP MY CURRENT DOCTOR, HOSPITAL,
PHARMACY, AND LABORATORY?

to receive care in Oregon. You may not have access to
local specialists, services, or hospitals even for simple
exams or minor surgical procedures. In some cases,
your doctors may be covered but your laboratory
services or imaging technicians may not be. Make sure
you know where your care will be delivered before
signing up.
HOW WILL THE COVERAGE FIT MY ACTUAL NEEDS?
It’s helpful to assess your current health issues and take
a close look at the kinds of claims you’ve had recently,
weighing them against the coverage a new plan will
offer.
WHAT’S THE MOST I’LL HAVE TO PAY
OUT OF POCKET?
Premiums are only one consideration. It’s important
to consider other factors, such as deductibles, co-
insurance, and copayments. A health plan that seems
less expensive may have hidden costs in gas money,
time away from work, and time spent appealing claims
for services that you assumed were covered.
IF THERE’S A DISPUTE ABOUT A BILL OR SERVICE,
HOW WILL IT BE HANDLED?
Sometimes third parties have a role. It’s a good idea to
learn how problems will be addressed upfront.
