J E R RY HOWE L L ,
of Kalama, pictured at right, could
barely walk. His hips were stiff, he had spinal stenosis, and
he just felt lousy. From his running for 26 years, the fibrous
cartilages in both of his hip joints were worn out, and the
balls of his hip joints were egg-shaped. Over the years, he
had simply pounded them flat.
He got cortisone shots in his back and saw a neurosurgeon
for the stenosis, but it wasn’t until he saw orthopedic
surgeon William Turner, MD, that he knew he was on
the right track. He had one posterior hip replacement in
October 2012 and another in February 2013. Jerry had
both of his surgeries at PeaceHealth St. John Medical
Center, and he did his rehab at its Joint Replacement
Center in Longview.
Jerry had done his homework—he knew he would have
to learn his exercises and stick to them to be successful. He
did a pre-operation class and read all the literature. He had
only a few exercises for his home program, but they were
very important, and his body told him so.
“They gave me a bunch of little exercises to do,” he says.
“They don’t seem like much, but I did them every day. If I
didn’t, my leg would start barking at me.”
Within six weeks of each surgery, he was riding a bicycle.
Today, he rides a bike, walks at least a mile a day, golfs three
times a week, and does a yoga program on his Wii.
Each of his surgeries was under an hour, and he was
released from the hospital in about two days. Even before
his surgeries, he had been practicing his rehab exercises,
including getting in and out of the car. “The hardest thing I
had to do was get into the car on the way home,” he says.
Jerry keeps up with his Joint Replacement team
and stays motivated for rehab by attending quarterly
reunion luncheons hosted by the Joint Replacement
Center. He couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome,
and he encourages everyone in his position to have
their hips replaced.
“This is the first surgery I have ever had in my life,” says
Jerry. “I knew they were going to take care of me, and
that’s what happened.”
